2 Oct: Stood up by the Movies

This morning at 7 the sky was mostly clear but when we caught the harbor ferry for a ride at 10, it was mostly cloudy. Here's what Wellington looks like from the water on a mostly cloudy day.

The harbour ferry is a modern catamaran.

One of the big inter-island ferries such as we'll take next week. The harbour setting is dramatic.

It's really quite a small city, although there are extensive suburbs over the hills. While some of the buildings are handsome enough, the overall impression is of a bit of a hodgepodge. On the other hand, it's clean, there is little graffiti and no visible homeless. Some street scenes in the posher part of downtown.

We had booked a "Wellington in the Movies" tour for the afternoon but after waiting around at the pickup point in a cold wind for 40 minutes we found out that they had a "problem with the van" and would be late. So we bailed on that.

Plan B was to do at 6pm what we'd planned to do at 8pm after the movie tour, namely, see the remake of "Fame" in a local theater. This was mainly to see Kherington Payne, a contestant from So You Think You Can Dance that we liked, who has a big role in it.

The theater was lovely, a huge screen, bigger than even Century 22, and a huge auditorium with very comfortable seats and great sight-lines. "Fame" was entertaining enough and Kherington looked great.

Dinner was casual, in the food court on the ground floor under the cineplex. Then Marian got a sweet tooth attack so we went to Strawberry Fare, a restaurant we'd eaten at which has a great dessert menu, and sugared out.
