Although the sky looked favorable in the morning we decided to move on and possibly pick up the Queen Charlotte Sound bird tour in a few weeks when we swing back to Picton. So we headed out on the Charlotte Sound Road, a scenic drive along the edges of several sounds.

The weather was splendid and so was the scenery. Here are a few pics. There are just too many good ones to post here so for once we've made good on the promise to put more in the smugmug gallery. Check it out.
That last picture is looking south toward Mt. Richmond national park, and those peaks should be a preview of the kind of scenery we will be getting into when we turn south in a few days.
Mussels
We stopped for lunch in the town of Havelock, which bills itself as the Green-Shelled Mussel Capitol of The World, and had mussels both steamed and broiled.
Pelorus Bridge
We also stopped for an hour-long walk at Pelorus Bridge Scenic Reserve, a preserved example of native river-forest. (Yes, the walk did include one staircase. It's a NZ trail requirement.) The Pelorus river is pretty, as well.
